Viera High School Students Impress In Competitions
March 31, 2022 – The students at Viera High School are fierce competitors. Recently, the Hawks have excelled in the Odyssey of the Mind (OM™) competition and at the Florida Federation of Colorguards Circuit (FFCC), where two Viera High teams excelled.
After placing 2nd in their category, Viera High School Odyssey of the Mind team has been invited to attend the World Finals at Iowa State in May.
In a world of rocket scientists here on the Space Coast, you would expect that the apples would not fall far from the tree, and that’s the case for the Viera OM team. Odyssey of the Mind teaches students how to develop and use their natural creativity to become problem-solvers. OM also emphasizes teamwork, budgeting, time management and public speaking.
The FFCC offers a competitive outlet during winter for color guard, indoor marching percussion and concert percussion teams and winds. The Viera HS Concert Percussion group has competed in and won the “Percussion Scholastic Concert Open” competition in past years and came within a whisker of doing it again. The first place Boca Roton team scored a total of 86.9 points, while Viera racked up 86.6 – only .3 behind. Very impressive.

In the “Digital Performance Gear Division” the Hawks earned a 4th place showing, with a total score of 79.9, behind the winners from Valdosta, GA, who scored 84.55. This is the first year the Hawks have participated in this category of the FFCC competition, so we can expect great things in the future. The piece performed by Viera HS Percussion for the “indoor” competition was composed specifically for the competition by Viera High Percussion Director Dan Johnson and UCF Drumline Instructor Bryant Bernal, who worked with Viera for indoor this year.
If you think “percussion” is simply pounding on a drum, you are in for a surprise. Watch the videos to see the full extent of just how musical an array of percussion instruments can be in the hands of these talented, dedicated Hawks. Add in a truly dramatic performance with movement and precision and you’ll see just how hard these young people work.

Viera congratulates the Hawks on their excellent showings and wishes them the best of luck on future competitions.
