VHS Varsity Girls Volleyball At State
November 14, 2022 – In a nail-biting and valiant effort, the Viera Hawks Varsity Girls Volleyball team came this close to taking it all at the Florida 6A volleyball state championship. Although in the end that honor went to the New Smyna Beach Barracudas, the Hawks literally could not have made the contest any more competitive.
Check out the stats in the five-set match: in the first set Viera won 25-23, with New Smyrna picking up sets two and three at 25-15 and 25-18. Set number 4 was again Viera’s at 25-19 to tie up the contest at two sets apiece. Then the final and deciding set went to the Barracudas with a razor thin 16-14 victory.
Head coach Sarah Wayne has 17 years of coaching under her belt, after playing the sport in Brevard during her high schools years and then for the University of Kentucky. She took to facebook to let everyone know how proud she is of her team.
“This season has been immensely special,” Wayne said, “and it has nothing to do with our accomplishments and wins/losses. This group of 14 young women showed up ready to work everyday and gave it all they had… and that, of course, is every coach’s dream. We came up 1 point short of capturing the state title yesterday… but the fight was clear. The message was clear—WE ARE VIERA.”
