Access to the wetlands will be only for pedestrians (including those on bicycles). Roads under construction will be off-limits to motorized vehicles.
“We are happy to provide a limited access to allow the public to experience the wetlands,” said Brevard County Utility Services Director Edward Fontainin, “We ask for patience as the contractor is working on completion.”
The wetlands have not been open to the public since June 2024. Since then a $2.7 million project has been underway to remove vegetive muck and overgrown cattails from four ponds. Work continues on the 200-acre site, which is why access is limited, and why authorities caution that if you visit you will not be seeing a finished project. It is anticipated that vegetation plantings will occur in April and May, with completion of the overall project expected in June.
So if you don’t mind staying out of the way of construction equipment and understand that the possible dirt access road may be a little muddy after a rain shower, then head out to 3658 Charlie Corbeil Way in Viera. It’s only natural.
