VIERA CHARTER SCHOOL NAMED AVID NATIONAL DEMONSTRATION SCHOOL

Suzanne Hoffman, dean of students at VCS in the middle school and AVID district director and AVID coordinator at VCS told Viera Voice, “100 percent of our Grade 8 students that graduate from here are eligible to take Algebra I and higher math in high school,” Hoffman said. “A far majority of our students are taking 10th math or 11th grade math because they have taken rigorous courses here. So AVID has provided the opportunity to support these students in middle school who are taking rigorous math courses to be ready for the next step.”

According to Viera Charter School’s facebook, “For 7 years, our AVID program has grown into a schoolwide culture of belief, leadership, and academic excellence. From focused note‑taking and collaboration to critical reading and purposeful communication, our students are living the AVID philosophy every single day — and it shows. “
