September 14, 2026 – The shore of Florida’s Space Coast is a very important stretch of beach for sea turtles to lay their eggs each year. Here’s an update from Friends of the Carr Refuge, but keep in mind this is only a portion of the 72 miles of the county that touch the Atlantic Ocean. It’s great to see these sea creatures doing what comes naturally.
Sea Turtle Nest Counts as of September 4, 2026 at the Archie Carr National Wildlife Refuge
Leatherback (Dermochelys coriacea) – 94
Loggerhead (Caretta caretta) – 21,954
Green (Chelonia mydas) – 20,690
Kemps Ridley (Lepidochelys kempii) – 1
This information is gathered by the UCF Marine Turtle Research Group, Sebastian Inlet State Park and Ecological Associates, Inc at the refuge.
