September 3, 2026 – The Economic Development Commission (EDC) is calling on NASA and the Presidential Commission on the U.S. Space Academy to establish the recently announced Federal Academy on Florida’s Space Coast.

“The EDC stands ready to work alongside our partners to support the establishment of the U.S. Space Academy on the Space Coast,” said EDC Chair-Elect Todd Pokrywa (left). “With our region’s unmatched combination of assets and capabilities, we are uniquely positioned to help educate and inspire the next generation of leaders who will shape America’s future.” Pokrywa is also the President of the Viera Company and COO Real Estate Group, A. Duda & Sons, Inc.

“There is no better place to launch this mission than Florida’s Space Coast,” said EDC President and CEO Lynda L. Weatherman (left). “Few regions have played a more significant role in America’s journey of exploration, innovation, and discovery. The case for the Space Coast is grounded in its extraordinary capabilities that exist here today, creating an environment unlike any other in the nation.”
President Donald J. Trump’s August 28 Executive Order establishing the Presidential Commission on the U.S. Space Academy represents an important step toward preparing the next generation of Americans to lead across the space domain. The Space Academy will prepare the next generation of astronauts, scientists, engineers, operators, entrepreneurs, civil servants, and warfighters to advance American interests in space and serve across the nation’s military, civil government, and broader space enterprise.
The Space Academy is envisioned as an institution that combines rigorous technical education with leadership development, discipline, and commitment to public service. These principles are deeply embedded in the ethos and work ethic of Florida’s Space Coast, where generations of Americans have turned bold ideas into historic achievements.
