PLANNED AQUARIUM AT PORT CANAVERAL GETS FEDERAL BOOST
February 20, 2026 – Brevard Zoo’s future $140 million Bowen Aquarium and Conservation Center recently received a boost from the federal government of $1.75 million, aimed toward sea turtle research and rehabilitation.
The funds will help build the Scaife Family Sea Turtle Care Complex, adding to a $5 million grant from the DSF Charitable Foundation.
Groundbreaking on Brevard Zoo’s new aquarium, which will be located near Port Canaveral, is expected to happen this year, followed by two to three years of construction. Spanning 14 acres of shoreline along the Banana River, the complex will focus on coastal conservation, environmental education and the rehabilitation of imperiled marine species throughout Florida.
The aquarium is expected to draw 525,000 visitors annually and create 900 jobs.
Brevard Zoo itself is located in Viera and the Zoo has continually been recognized as a leading organization in top zoo lists and awards from the Association of Zoos and Aquariums.
